ASJA is a national organization of independent non-fiction writers, with over 1000 freelance writers of magazine articles, trade books, and other forms of non-fiction writing. If you have published at least two books or a series of articles, you might be eligible for membership. The organization is a great source of assistance with information about the industry, contracts, agents, leads for writing, etc. ASJA sponsors national and regional conferences and local programs both for published and new writers. Active local chapters in many areas.

This is a national organization for book and other writers. Membership is open to any author who has had a book published by an established American publisher within the past seven years, or has had three works of fiction or nonfiction published by a periodical of general circulation within the past 18 months. Associate memberships are available to those with forthcoming projects. The organization is especially helpful with contract and legal matters. Active local chapters in many areas.

This group has a variety of programs to support writers, including insurance programs, royalty contract assistance, and local meetings.  It also has a jobs hotline, which provides job leads on their Web site which are updated each week.

• PublishersMarketplace.  This features the latest deals by major publishers and agents.  Plus as a subscriber, you can have your own Web page, list available manuscripts, and more.

• The Cassell Network of Writers: provides writers with leads for jobs and markets, along with features on trends and tips on succeeding as a freelance writer.

• Literary Marketplace: the publishing Bible.  Provides additional detail on agents, such as names of foreign reps, and has lists of publishers, book promotion sources, etc.  

• Publishers Weekly: features latest news on the publishing industry for the professional in the field.

• Writer's Digest Books: publishes numerous directories and books for writers, including books on agents and publishers, with an emphasis on the smaller agents and publishers that are most receptive to newer writers.
